The young fish who lived, swum and played in a large fish tank, for the amusement of young Derrick aged ten, were having their morning Science class with Professor Gill.
These classes took place every day at z- y time and were held near a large pebble that the young Derrick had proudly put in the tank a few months ago.
The fish were bored as they would rather be playing about in the water, but they knew that every fish had to attend , " The Shoal ".
Professor Gill was rambling on about the D.S.F. or the daily sky food..He explained that everyday the Loon , which was a massive cloud, would hover in the sky and drop bits of yum yum. This was their food.It was very regular and had happened for thousands of years.
Night and day, he said, were caused by , what he called ," The Switch "., which scientists believed was a weather pattern that meant every twelve hours or so the weather would switch from light to dark. The scientists admitted that they did not fully understand this.
As for the glass walls in the aquarium , these were the limits of the Universe ; what could be observed outside these walls, were the ' Globus ', a mass of energy fields that gave the appearance of shapes and forms, but these were what kept the Universe as it was.
If you were unfortunate enough to enter ,' The Globus' you would die within minutes.
Sometimes a ' Neticane ' would descend into the water and capture a fish; this was dreaded by everyone. What caused , ' The Neticane '. to take place was a result of energy A ( that which dropped the yum yum )
undergoing a surge of particle zooms caused by fluctuations in the energy field.
Very rarely, a large furry paw would try and capture a fish. This would always come from the sky and it was called a pawnade.
Professor Gill reminded the class that the myths surrounding their culture that there was a golden place , vast area and full of all types of different creations was, a lie and had no scientific basis. He assured them that this was it : the fish tank was the entire universe.
As for those myths about anglers ( demons ) who stole fish. this was, he said, complete rubbish.
The fish, apart from one, all believed him, as had all the other fish that had lived before.
At that moment, Derrick walked by the fish tank and tapped his finger on the glass.
Professor Gill smiled.
'' And that,'' He said '' Is a good example of a very minor fingerquake caused by the glass boundary of the universe coming in contact with an energy cloud which was a sudden surge of elecritical energy.''
The fish all believed him. as had their fathers and mothers before them
It was now time for the fishes break, but as the fish were leaving, a young fish called out to Professor Gill..
He said: '' I believe that the Loom that drops the yum yum is an alien. ''.
The whole class collapsed with laughter.
Professor Gill glared at the young fish.He yelled:'' You must satay in in this plaice and not move about for a period of qc- 4: , all the time repeating, '' There are no aliens.''.
Professor Gill hurried away to chat to piano tuna who was playing with the octopus. '' That young fish really believes any fin weird. '' He said.
'' Whale, he must be mad then, '' replied Piano Tuna, '' But don't carp on about it, or mullett it over. Just relax your sole. We could sing, ' Mackeral The Knife 'if you like, or a song by Shirley Bassey or Cod Stewart.
