Our True Nature.
Just because you are not aware of your true state of being- your true nature which is like a jewel shining bright- does not mean that it doesn't exist.What is your true nature ? Do you imagine it is someone like you ?A superior, wiser you ? Is that it ?
Yes and no I suppose is near a correct answer, because when your true self ( which has always been there) comes to the fore, its intelligence and awareness is vastly superior to your ego's, so yes, you would be a superior being in one respect.
What I am going to write later in this article, people usually find hard to grasp, because it is outside the usual mode of thinking.Before I write this though, let's examine how we perceive ' the real you '.
Generally when people hear about ' the real you ' that is hidden under the ego and 6,000 thoughts a day, they usually imagine some being like a Buddha or Christ, being like ' the real you '.
The true words of the Christ and the true words of the Buddha share a common ground.There cleverest ploy though was to direct the ego away from itself, and to shift attention from that false identity on to either Christ or the Buddha.They replace the ego with an energy field in the form of Christ or the Buddha. Therefore people can relate and aspire to these symbols of truth, and not spend their lives dictated to by an ego.
The real nature of your true face though is not another face ! It has no face.The next bit is what people find hard to understand. I will let Hui Hai explain it. Hui Hai was a Zen master known as ' The Great Pearl '. John Blofeld translated the wondrous writings of this enlightened man in a book called, " The Zen Teaching Of Hui Hai ", published by Rider in 1962.
The following is on page 96 of that book.
" Your not having perceived your own nature does not imply that you lack that nature. Why so ?
Because perception itself is that nature. Consciousness is also that nature, whence it is called the nature of consciousness, Understanding is also that nature, whence it is called the nature of understanding,"
What Hui Hai is saying is that we are awareness and perception itself; that is what and who we are.Some disagree and claim that awareness is our true state of being and consciousness is an offshoot or child of awareness, but I won't go into that now. The staggering truth though is that we are awareness itself.
As I wrote in 'The Lyrical Bit ' on this blog;
That which makes the sunshine,
That which makes the world turn ,
That which makes the trees grow ,
That which makes the birds sing ,
That which makes the seeds grow ,
That which makes your heartbeat,
That which makes your senses know ,
is you, the real hidden you.
This is you- a jewel shining bright.Once you understand the truth that you are awareness, and really feel it, you can say like iku said;
" I have one jewel shining bright,
Long buried, it was underneath worldly worries;
This morning the dusty veil is off, and restored in its lustre,
Illumining rivers and mountains and ten thousand things. "
